Go by your owner's manual, not a round number

The old rule of every 3,000 miles comes from older engines and older oil. Most modern cars, especially on synthetic oil, call for longer intervals, and many have an oil-life monitor that works it out from how the car is driven.

Short trips, towing, dusty roads and a lot of idling count as severe service in most owner's manuals, and they shorten the interval. If most of your driving is short hops around town, change it sooner.

The filter matters as much as the oil. We replace it on every oil change.
