A cheap gasket in an expensive place

A valve cover gasket costs little. What it leaks onto is the problem. Oil running down the engine lands on the exhaust manifold and burns, and on engines with the spark plugs under the cover it fills the plug wells and soaks the coils.

Oil-soaked coils and boots misfire, so a leak left long enough turns a gasket job into a gasket, plugs and coils job.

Heat and age harden the gasket, which is why the leak starts slowly and gets worse.
