A flashing check engine light means more than a steady one

A steady check engine light means the computer has stored a fault. A flashing one usually means an active misfire: fuel is going into a cylinder and not burning. That unburned fuel ends up in the exhaust, where it can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, which costs far more than plugs and coils.

Spark plugs wear out on a schedule set in your owner's manual. Coils tend to fail one at a time, often after a worn plug has made them work harder.

If the light is flashing, drive gently, skip hard acceleration and call.
